Chetumal. – The General Director of Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (Apiqroo), Alicia Ricalde Magaña reported that in 2018 the company recorded the movement of 16 million 546 thousand 893 passengers in maritime terminals at Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Puerto Juarez, Chetumal and Punta Sam, representing an increase of 9.3% compared to 2017.
The official also stressed that last year Cozumel reached one thousand 296 cruises with four million 265 thousand 525 passengers, which means an increase of 4.1% and 3.9%, respectively, compared with 2017 in which one thousand 245 floating hotels berthed with four million 103 thousand 787 travelers.
“With these results, once again Cozumel leadership in the cruise industry in Mexico and Latin America reaffirms, allowing Quintana Roo to have more and better opportunities for economic development”, she said.
The head of the Apiqroo said that with the operation of two shipping companies covering the federal route Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez benefited the tourism cooperatives in the area.
“In 2018, the maritime terminal of Puerto Juarez reported moving 604,150 passengers, while in 2017 was 14 thousand 905 users”, she added.
Ricalde Magaña noted that, from January to December last year, the maritime terminal of Isla Mujeres recorded the movement of five million 396 thousand 707 passengers, an increase of 16.2% based on the five million 262 thousand 979 users who they reported in 2017.
“The number of users we had at Isla Mujeres exceeded four million 557 thousand 927 passengers on the federal route Playa del Carmen-Cozumel”, she said.
The general director of the Apiqroo also noted that the movement of passengers in Punta Sam was 275 thousand 69 users, while Chetumal maritime terminal reported 25 thousand 377.
